Have it all in Edina. With top-notch schools, unique shopping areas, and fabulous parks, this first-ring suburb feels like a small town that’s within 9 minutes of downtown Minneapolis.

Edina prides itself on being a strong family community, and is the reason many are drawn to this area. Edina High School routinely is ranked as one of the top schools in the nation. Publications such as Newsweek have honored its academic achievements, and its well-regarded sports program has been mentioned in Sports Illustrated. Most impressively, nearly 96 percent of high school graduates go on to college, and 85 percent complete an undergraduate degree within five years.

Originally settled by Irish immigrants in the 1860s, this affluent community was named after the Scottish city of Edinborough — now the name of the city’s popular indoor playground Edinborough Park (7700 York Ave.). Named the “Best Kids’ Play Area in Minnesota,” this popular 1-acre fully enclosed indoor park operated by the city of Edina not only boast the giant Adventure Peak, but is also home to a junior-Olympic size swimming pool, a 250-seat Greek-style amphitheater, a running track and fitness area, and a multi-purpose banquet room. All of this amenities are connected by meandering pathways through the densely landscaped interior, which contains more than 6,000 plants, trees and flowers, and stays at a lovely 70 degrees year round. A thriving senior living community rings the indoor Edina Park Plaza, and a Residence Inn by Marriott is connected.

In all, Edina’s parkland and open space totals more than 1,550 acres, including 44 parks and an outdoor aquatic center. Plus residents enjoy two public libraries, four golf courses (two public and two private), an art center, and a senior center. The city lays claim to Minnesota’s first indoor mall, the Southdale Center. Offering 1.3 million square feet of department stores, restaurants and an attractive multiplex movie theater, Southdale is across the street from the upscale Galleria. Quaint and charming, 50th and France is filled with one-of-a-kind shops, eateries and service businesses. The city also serves as headquarters for several large companies, including Jerry’s Foods, Lund Food Holdings, Edina Realty, Regis Corporation, Dairy Queen, and Orange Julius.

Edina is one of the most affluent suburbs of Minneapolis, but it also offers a wide variety of opportunities for first-time buyers looking to relocate and settle down in the suburbs. The median household income in Edina in 1999 was $66,019, compared to the averages of $37,974 for Minneapolis and $47,111 for the state of Minnesota. Edina is home to a few billionaires, most notably Richard M. Schulze.

This one city offers many different neighborhoods to pick from, including Highlands, Indian Hills, Morningside, Country Club District, Cahill Village, Chapel Hill, South Harriet Park, Interlachen, Rolling Green, Presidents, Sunnyslope, White Oaks, Parkwood Knolls, Braemar Hills, Birchcrest, Dewey Hill and Hilldale.

Edina is popular, in part, due to its convenient proximity to several major highways. Highways 62 and 100 divide the city into four sections. Highways 169 and 100 extend north and south, while Interstate 494 and Highway 62 extend east and west. According to a National Research Center survey, everyone likes living in Edina. And no wonder. It’s a great play to live and play.
