The residents of Kenny neighborhood in Southwest Minneapolis love their community so much that when they move, it’s often to another house on the same street! The proof of how much residents love their neighborhood is that many homes only go on the market every 20 to 30 years, and are only on their fourth owner.
The majority of single-family homes in this neighborhood of about 3,500 residents are owner occupied (96 percent) and were constructed between 1930 and 1950. There are many unique two-story homes with stucco, brick and metal siding exteriors, as well as single-story bungalows, that are generally larger than the houses in adjacent neighborhoods such as Armatage and Windom. The neighborhood, its park and its elementary school were named for Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse who developed the Kenny method of treating polio.
Neighborhood boundaries are West 54th Street to the north, Lyndale Avenue South and Highway 121 to the east, West 62nd Street to the south, and Logan Avenue South to the west, making it easy to access major thoroughfares to get downtown or uptown — but why would you want to? Kenny neighborhood is within walking distance of a park and recreation center, middle and elementary schools, a library, yoga center, drug store, coffee houses, fitness centers, hardware store, liquor store, grocery store, bank, restaurants, veterinary clinic, and more. In the 1950s, the Bachman family purchased a large field and relocated their nursery south of 58th Street, and it is now one of the most well-known businesses in the neighborhood.
A former gravel pit was transformed into Kenny Park, a green space with a wading pool, trails, tennis courts, playground, park building and athletic fields. The neighborhood center at 58th and Fremont Ave. S. is nestled between Kenny Elementary School and Anthony Middle School. One of the most beloved features of Kenny is Grass Lake, a 27-acre wetland that sits at the southern end of the Kenny neighborhood. Bird watch and enjoy nature — and forget that you’re in the largest metropolis in Minnesota.
In Kenny, kids walk to school, families participate in National Night Out and host yearly neighborhood alley parties, neighbors attend the Kenny Neighborhood Sommerfest get together, and everyone gathers for summertime movies at the park. Other activities hosted by the Kenny Neighborhood Association include the Kenny/Armatage Garage Sales (May), Kenny Ice Cream Social (June), the Kickin’ Back at Kenny Summer Festival and Kickball Tournament (July) and the Buckthorn Bust (October/November). Kenny neighborhood is known to be safe and stable, as the multi-generations of residents who choose to stay here will tell you.
