Often linked with its neighbor to the south, Standish neighborhood is one of the city’s most affordable up-and-coming areas to live. Ericsson to the south was ranked as one of the countries Top 10 Hottest Neighborhoods by Redfin in 2016, falling just short of Chicago’s Ukrainian Village and Nashville’s Eastwood neighborhoods. Standish is also part of the larger Powderhown area, which ranked at #9 that same year.

The Standish neighborhood on Minneapolis’ south side is bound on the north by 36th Street, on the east by Hiawatha Avenue, on the south by 42nd and 43rd streets, and on the west by Cedar Avenue. This neighborhood was named after an area elementary school, which had been called Miles Standish after a work by the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The area was considered the outskirts of the city until immigrants, mostly Swedish and Norwegian, began building their homes here early in the 1900s. Now it is a mainly residential neighborhood. The light-rail train line along the Hiawatha Avenue corridor connects the neighborhood with downtown to the north, and the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and Mall of America to the south. New homes were built along this corridor when land long held by MnDot along Hiawatha Ave. opened up in the 1990s and 2000s. The neighborhoods green thumb is put to work on one of the parcels of land still held by MnDot. The Southside Star Community Garden enables residents to take part in the growing urban agriculture movement.

Population growth has brought more children, adolescents and adults age 18-64 to Standish while the senior population has declined. The ethnic distribution of Standish has been changing significantly since the 1980s.  Although still the majority, the neighborhood’s white population decreased by 20 percent between 1980 and 2000 (according to census data). In contrast, the black population experienced a ten-fold increase. Similarly, Hispanics have increased by five times, Asians by four times, and American Indians by more than half of their 1980 population figures.

That’s not the only thing changing in the neighborhood. Its main street, 38th, is poised for a development boom. The greatest evolution is happening at the 38th Street Light Rail station and spreading out from there down both sides of the street with new commercial and housing structures. The node at 38th and 28th is home to two community favorites, A Cupcake Social and Northbound Smokehouse and Brew Pub. At 38th and 23rd, there’s a comic book shop, Irish Dance studio, Women’s Woodshop, office building, coffee house and wine bar, senior living facility, and art studio. At the main drag at Cedar and 38th is a candy shop, grocery store, record shop, martial arts studio, coffee shop, acupuncture office, small engine repair shop, Ethiopian restaurant, and more. Other local businesses line 42nd on the south, including Angry Catfish Coffee House and Bicycle shop, Buster’s on 28th restaurant, and Baker’s Wife bakery plus the longtime St. Mane Sporting Goods and family-run Hudson Hardware.

Roosevelt High, one of the city’s eight high schools, is known for its International Baccalaureate program. Its emphasis on connecting students with art and hands-on projects is evident in the front yard sculptures, greenhouse and mosaic murals. Across the street is the small but beloved Roosevelt Library, originally constructed courtesy of Carnegie Funds and renovated by the Hennepin County Library system in 2013.

Sibley Park is well-kept and offers scenic walking paths, tennis courts, a wading pool, playground and tot lot very close to each other so the whole family can have fun in the park. Neighborhood residents are within easy walking distance of the playground, golf course and trails at Lake Hiawatha, and a short bike ride from Minnehaha Falls. Bike trails, designated bike lanes along 42nd and 38th, and the Riverlake Greenway point to the popularity of bicycling by residents. And why not when so much of what you need is just a few blocks away?
